The Westmorland Way is often described as one of the Lake District’s lesser-known long-distance walks and that’s exactly its appeal. Stretching roughly 95 miles (150 km), it runs from Appleby-in-Westmorland to Arnside on the edge of Morecambe Bay.
Unlike the busier national trails, this route feels more grounded in the landscape it passes through, connecting market towns, working countryside, and quieter corners of the Lakes without the crowds.

For decades, walkers have followed the spirit of Alfred Wainwright, who first brought the route to life in his famous guidebook. Today, the Coast to Coast National Trail has become one of the UK’s most iconic long-distance walks, drawing people from around the world to cross the north of England from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay.

Walking the Coast to Coast path through The Eden Valley isn’t just about ticking off miles. It’s about the moments in between – the pauses for lunch, the quiet benches with a view, the places where tired legs meet good food and a proper night’s sleep.

Sometimes, the world moves too fast. Emails, deadlines, social media – you know as well as we do, they never stop. That’s why here, at Augill Castle we’re your sanctuary. Your place for a soul reset.

Springtime and Easter here at Augill Castle is one of those quietly magical times of year. The moors and dales starts to wake up, the light softens across the hills, lambs appear in nearby fields (and our own!), and families finally get the breathing space to slow down together.

Whether you’re planning a short stay or a whole Easter weekend, there’s plenty to explore within 60 minutes of Augill Castle, the 2025 Telegraph Best Family Boutique Hotel.

There’s something quietly special about walking in the Eden Valley. The landscape opens out gently here – wide skies, rolling pasture, rivers that take their time – and walking feels less like a challenge to conquer and more like a way of being in the world.

Back in early May, we quietly began a very special project here at Augill Castle. With your support we set out to create a Legacy Orchard in memory of Simon. For those who knew him, it will come as no surprise that Simon loved trees, particularly those that offered something delicious to taste and share, for a man who also loved his food.
