Winter Walks and Early Spring Days, Eden Valley

Whether you’re here for frosty mornings or gentle thawing days, there’s magic to be found in the Eden Valley that lies beyond Augill Castle, and beyond.

There’s something wonderfully grounding about winter and early spring in Cumbria: wellies lined up in the hallway (we have a rack!), rich suppers on the table, the scent of woodsmoke in the air, and skies that swirl with winter light – perfect for cosy adventures from your home‑from‑home here at Augill Castle.

Here’s our curated list of ways to make the most of the season from now until March:

Markets, Town Strolls & Village Life

Monday Markets in Kirkby Stephen, Eden Valley

Every Monday, the Market Square fills with local traders, crafts, fresh produce and friendly faces – the perfect seasonal ramble with a stop for tea after.

Appleby Saturday Market

On Saturdays throughout late winter and early March, Appleby’s small outdoor market brings fresh local goods and artisan stands — a lovely reason to wrap up and wander.

Orton Farmers’ Market (14 March)

A bustling, partly sheltered farmers’ market with village charm and great local finds – from cheese and bread to seasonal flowers.

Seasonal Events & Community Happenings

Fun Local February Events in Kirkby Stephen

From friendly bingo nights to community gettogethers and socials through February, there’s plenty of local warmth and spirit to enjoy just a short drive or stroll from the castle.

Warm Spaces & Community Cafés

Across Appleby and surrounding villages, weekly drop‑ins, coffee mornings, soup lunches and social hubs offer cosy refuge from winter winds – an ideal way to feel part of village life.

Countryside Walks & Fresh Air Moments

Riverside Rambles Around Kirkby Stephen

The gentle banks of the River Eden make for satisfying short walks any time of year – crisp air, soft sounds of water and the chance to spot winter waterfowl, too.

Smardale Gill Nature Reserve

Just a short drive brings you to limestone valleys and quiet woodland paths – perfect for winter strolls among nature’s quieter moments.

Scenic Paths & Poetry Trails

Wander local footpaths and riverside trails around Kirkby Stephen – with poetry stones, bridges and meadows to explore, each walk feels like its own story. Our favourite local walk, much travelled with our children, and dogs over the years.

Tea Rooms, Pubs & Treat‑Stops

Nothing beats warming up after a frosty wander with a steaming pot of tea, hearty lunch or slice of cake in one of our local cafés or pubs. You’ll find friendly stops in Kirkby Stephen, Appleby and the surrounding villages of The Eden Valley, and some more of our very own recommendations for Sunday pub lunches, and coffee stops here.

Simon was very much a National Trust afternoon cup of tea & cake man on our explorations, and some of his favourite spots are included just here!
