A Castle, a Winter’s Night, and the Poetry of Robert Burns

Burns Night is one of Scotland’s most beloved traditions, and its charm has captured hearts far beyond the Borders. For anyone who has experienced it in Scotland, perhaps in Fife or maybe at university in St Andrews, it’s easy to fall in love with the poetry, the whisky, and the warmth of shared celebration.

But Burns Night isn’t just about tradition – it’s about celebrating the life and legacy of Robert Burns in your own unique way, with good food, heartfelt readings, laughter, and plenty of fun. In 2026, here at our beautiful Augill Castle in Cumbria we’re hosting an unforgettable Burns Night weekend that brings this historic celebration to life.

Who Was Robert Burns?

Robert Burns (1759–1796) is Scotland’s national poet, renowned worldwide for his songs and poetry, including Auld Lang Syne, A Red, Red Rose, Ae Fond Kiss, and Tam O’ Shanter. His work blends humour, humanity, and lyrical beauty, and his legacy continues to inspire celebrations across the UK and around the globe.

Burns’ birthday, January 25th, is now commemorated with Burns Suppers, an occasion to enjoy poetry, whisky, fine dining, and, above all, friendship. We start our weekend of celebrations on the 23rd to throughly embrace the Burns celebrations all weekend!

The Origins of Burns Night

Following Burns’ death in 1796, his friends hosted a memorial dinner, reciting his poems and enjoying hearty meals of haggis, neeps and tatties. By 1802, official Burns Night suppers were taking place, and over the centuries, the celebration spread beyond Scotland, becoming a cherished tradition across the UK and worldwide.

Celebrating Burns Night: Traditions and Tips

At its heart, a Burns Night celebration is about connection and joy. Key elements often include:

  • The Selkirk Grace; short, traditional blessing before the meal.
  • The Burns Night Procession & Address to the Haggis; a very theatrical and celebratory moment, honouring Scotland’s iconic dish with poetry and ritual.
  • The Immortal Memory; a speech reflecting on Burns’ life and works.
  • Poetry and Storytelling; recitations of favourites such as Tam O’ Shanter, bringing Burns’ humour and wit to life.
  • Toasts and Songs; raise a dram of whisky, toast the lassies and lads, and finish with Auld Lang Syne.

While some celebrations may include bagpipes and a ceilidh, this year at Augill Castle our focus is on creating a lively, warm, and joyful atmosphere. Dancing may happen spontaneously, laughter is guaranteed, and everyone is encouraged to enjoy Burns Night in their own way.
