Not every wedding needs 150 guests, a three-course schedule of formalities and a venue that hosts another couple the following Saturday.
Sometimes you just want the people you love, somewhere properly special, really good food, a few drinks, somewhere beautiful to get married and enough time to actually enjoy it.
That is where Augill Castle comes in.
Tucked away in the Eden Valley, between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, Augill is an unusual wedding venue in the very best sense. It is a real castle, but it doesn’t feel like a grand hotel. It feels more like a much-loved country house that happens to have turrets, beautiful rooms, acres of garden and a rather good place to get married.
We specialise in small and intimate weddings in Cumbria and near the Lake District, from weddings for two through to celebrations of up to 40 guests inside the castle. Every wedding here is on exclusive use, so the castle closes to everyone but your party, and our ten bedrooms and suites sleep 20 adults, or 26 once children’s beds are in. If you have a bigger guest list, our gardens can accommodate weddings of up to 120 with a marquee, giving you the option of a larger celebration while still having the castle and its surroundings as your backdrop.
And small doesn’t mean you have to compromise.
In fact, quite the opposite.
A smaller wedding means you can spend more time with the people who have travelled to be with you. You can actually sit down and eat your wedding breakfast. You can hear every story, raise a glass with everyone in the room and wake up the next morning still talking about it.
There is no pressure to follow a wedding formula here. You can have the wedding you actually want.
Perhaps that’s a tiny ceremony followed by dinner for your closest family. Perhaps it’s a full castle takeover with your favourite people staying for two nights. Perhaps it’s an elopement, just the two of you, somewhere completely removed from everyday life.

Just The Two Of Us - Elopements
A wedding for two. Just you, your partner, and the magic of the moment.
Two nights in the Gatehouse Suite, a ceremony in the Drawing Room with witnesses provided, and dinner for two by candlelight.

Perfect Day - Just For The Day
An intimate wedding, just for the day. The Mini brings your twelve closest people; the Maxi seats up to 40 in the castle with the doors closed to everyone else from three in the afternoon until midnight. From £2,500.
All Night & All Day - Exclusive Use
The whole castle, exclusively yours for two nights. Twenty adults asleep in ten bedrooms and suites, 40 at dinner, up to 120 in the garden. £9,600.

Augill Castle has been our family home since 1997 and that family atmosphere is still very much part of what we do. We aren’t trying to be a polished, anonymous wedding hotel. We want you to feel comfortable enough to kick off your shoes, wander into the kitchen, have breakfast in your pyjamas, sit by the fire and make yourselves at home.
It is relaxed, personal and deliberately a little bit different.

How many guests can Augill Castle hold?
Anywhere from two to 120. Up to 40 guests can join you for a ceremony and dinner inside the castle, and up to 120 can celebrate in the gardens with a marquee. Overnight, ten bedrooms and suites sleep 20 adults, or 26 once children’s beds are in. There is no single Augill wedding template: our packages run from a wedding for two, through intimate celebrations with your closest people, to exclusive use of the whole castle. Tell us what you have in mind and we’ll work out what fits.
Can we have exclusive use of the castle?
Yes, and this is where things get really rather special. Our Exclusively Yours package closes the castle to everyone but your wedding party for two nights at £9,600 including VAT, and the Perfect Day Maxi gives you exclusive use of the castle and grounds from 3pm until midnight. You will never share Augill with another wedding or with hotel guests you have never met. It feels much more like staying in an enormous country house with all your favourite people than hiring a wedding venue.
Can we get married and have the whole celebration at Augill Castle?
Yes. We are licensed for civil ceremonies, so the ceremony, drinks, wedding breakfast and evening celebration all happen here, with nobody moving between venues. Ceremonies take place in the Music Room, which seats up to 40, or in the smaller Drawing Room if there are only a handful of you. The gardens take the drinks and the photographs. Because there are several spaces, your day doesn’t have to feel like you have spent all of it in one room.
Can we get married outdoors?
Most ceremonies take place in the Music Room, which seats up to 40 and is the one with the rich warm colours, the antique furniture, the hand-painted gold wall and a fire lit through the colder months. If there are only a handful of you, the Drawing Room is the cosier choice, and it is where weddings for two marry. On a fine day you can marry in the gardens instead, with the Music Room ready as your indoor plan.
Which room will we get married in?
You can. The gardens make a beautiful ceremony spot with the fells as a backdrop, and if the Cumbrian weather has other ideas, the Music Room is ready as your indoor plan without any fuss on the day.
Can we choose our own suppliers and make the wedding our own?
Yes, and please do. We have suppliers we know and love and are happy to recommend them, but we are not interested in turning your wedding into a carbon copy of the one before it. We will work with you on the details that matter, from food and flowers to photography and entertainment. If you have got an idea, ask us. If you have got a Pinterest board that has got slightly out of hand, even better.
Where do our guests stay?
In the castle, ideally. Ten bedrooms and suites sleep 20 adults, with extra beds for children, and rooms are from £220 per night including breakfast. Everyone staying under one roof is one of the best bits: you wake up together, have breakfast together, and carry on long after the ceremony is over. If your party outgrows us there are good beds ten minutes away in Kirkby Stephen, and we will happily point you to the ones we trust.

How much does a wedding at Augill Castle cost?
Our prices are published on each package page. An elopement or wedding for two is £980, intimate Perfect Day weddings start at £2,500 for the Mini, the Maxi is £2,080 venue hire plus £125 per guest, and exclusive use of the whole castle for two nights is £9,600, all including VAT. Guest numbers and extra nights are what move the total from there.
Is Augill Castle in the Lake District?
We sit just east of the national park, about 40 minutes from Ullswater, where the Eden Valley meets the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Couples who want the Lakes for photographs the next day reach them easily, and in return they get a castle entirely to themselves on the quiet side. Or you can also explore the Yorkshire Dales National Park with equally stunning views and amazing photography locations.
Do you host small and intimate weddings?
Absolutely, and small weddings are rather our thing. Most Augill weddings are small: two people eloping, a dozen around one table, or a houseparty of twenty taking over the castle. You don’t need to invite 100 people simply because that’s what traditional wedding venues are set up for.
