Back in early May, we quietly began a very special project here at Augill Castle. With your support we set out to create a Legacy Orchard in memory of Simon. For those who knew him, it will come as no surprise that Simon loved trees, particularly those that offered something delicious to taste and share, for a man who also loved his food.
This orchard is more than just a collection of fruit trees – it is a living tribute, rooted in the heart of the Eden Valley, a place that meant so much to Simon.
Almost thirty years ago, he fell in love with this part of Cumbria – the rolling hills, winding rivers, quiet valleys that seem almost untouched by time. It was here that he found inspiration, some sense of peace, and a connection to nature, and it felt only right that a piece of his memory would grow here, surrounded by the landscape he adored.
Thanks to the generosity of friends, family, and supporters, our new mini-orchard is now taking shape. Planted at just the right time for the Eden Valley’s climate, it now boasts three cherry trees, two plum trees, and two apple trees – each chosen not only for their fruit but for their resilience and beauty in this unique corner of Cumbria. These trees are very new but already beginning to transform the castle grounds, and in Spring will be bringing life, colour, and the promise of seasonal harvests for years to come.
We’ve also created a quiet spot within the orchard — a special place to sit and take in the surroundings. From here, you can see the gentle hills of the Eden Valley stretching out beyond the castle grounds, hear the birds and just take in all that we have here at Augill, a place that Simon loved so much. It’s a peaceful corner to reflect, pause, and enjoy.
Each blossom and fruit is a reminder of Simon’s huge zest for life, and for the Eden Valley. Over time, the orchard will grow into a living Eden Valley legacy, offering both us and our guests a chance to enjoy the fruits of careful nurturing, and feel a sense of belonging in a landscape that has inspired generations, our family’s own generation.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed, supported, or simply held this idea in their hearts. Together, you’ve helped us create a legacy that is deeply rooted in the Eden Valley – a place of life & beauty that celebrates Simon and the part of the world he cherished so deeply.
We invite you to come stay a while, or wander among the trees when you join us for Afternoon Tea, and experience the orchard in the way Simon would have. We love that we have, with your help, a living celebration of a remarkable life, set in one of Cumbria’s most stunning landscapes.
